'El Topo,' 'Midnight Cowboy' top film events this week

The Republic | azcentral.com

Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky wrote, directed and stars in the mystical Western "El Topo," which is Spanish for "the mole."

If "A Fistful of Dollars" was too tame for you, perhaps "El Topo" will make the grade. The 1970 cult classic tops our list of film events this week.

'El Topo'

Gleeful insanity from Alejandro Jodorowsky. The 1970 film, about a gunfighter dressed in black on a quest for enlightenment, or something, has been a cult hit since its release, so it's a good pick for FilmBar's Attack of the Cult Movies showcase.

Details: April 3-9. See website for times. FilmBar, 815 N. Second St., Phoenix. $5. 602-595-9187, thefilmbarphx.com.

Arizona Filmmaker Showcase

The monthly celebration of Arizona directors returns. This month's lineup: "Beef Jerky," directed by James Jines, about a down-on-his-luck, low-rent hit man; and Keenan Murray's "Have a Nice Flight," about an airport security guard teaching the latest screening technique: anal scans.

Details: 8 p.m. Saturday, April 4. FilmBar, 815 N. Second St., Phoenix. $9. 602-595-9187, thefilmbarphx.com.

'Daryl Hall & John Oates: Recorded Live in Dublin'

If you turned on a radio in the 1980s, you almost certainly heard a Hall & Oates song, whether you wanted to or not. The duo recorded this one-night show last July at Dublin's Olympia Theatre, playing the hits. With interviews and backstage, behind-the-scenes footage.

Details: 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 3. FilmBar, 815 N. Second St., Phoenix. $9. 602-595-9187, thefilmbarphx.com.

'Midnight Cowboy'

John Schlesinger's 1969 classic won three Oscars, including best picture and director, and became the only X-rated film to win. Jon Voight is outstanding as the naive Texan hoping to make it as a prostitute in New York. So is Dustin Hoffman as con man "Ratso" Rizzo, who befriends him. Shown as part of the Trash Cinema Series.

Details: 1 p.m. Sunday, April 5. Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 N. Central Ave. $5 for museum members, $10 for non-members. 602-257-1222, phxart.org.
