Spiteful Brewer still, sadly, a nightmare to dreamers

A sign at a recent rally to allow 'dreamers' to drive.

Gov. Jan Brewer has tried to define her time in office as one of protecting Arizona children. It's a decent legacy for any governor. For anyone, really.

And she's blowing it.

Brewer worked hard and pushed hard to get reforms done with the state's former Child Protective Services. And she's tried to do her best with schools.

But kids come in all varieties, and the 25,000 Arizona young people who have been accepted into the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals programs -- the dreamers -- are our kids, too.

They were brought here by their parents and have grown up here. They've gone to school here. They've lived as American kids. As Arizona kids. Now, they want to give back. To go on with their lives here as contributing members of society.

And even though their deferred deportation status should allow them to get drivers licenses, allowing them a better chance to find and keep jobs, Brewer has denied it.

She's lost in court. And lost again. And now the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, without comment, rejected her request to delay enforcing its ruling that the governor and the state Department of Transportation are acting illegally in refusing to issue the licenses.

Game over, right?

Finally?

Not to Brewer. Her office will petition the Supreme Court for a stay,

I doubt they're get it. They shouldn't.

The states where other dreamers lives haven't pointed to any problems with the young people getting licenses. For years Arizona had allowed others with deferred deportation orders to get them.

There's no logic to Brewer's decision. She's still playing the anti-Obama game that got her so much attention a while back and accomplished nothing. There's no reason for it, now. The elections are over, and soon her term in office.

The only reason for persisting is ... spite.

What a silly, petty way to end a term in office. What a silly, petty way to do anything.
