Allhands: In Gilbert, management can be temporary

Patrick Banger has three assistants to the town manager. They're not what you think.

I'll admit: When I read about Gilbert's three new assistants to the town manager, my first thought was that scene from "The Office" where Dwight tries to make more out of his "assistant to the regional manager" position than it really is.

Titles aside, though, this is pretty cool:

Gilbert is hiring assistants temporarily to accomplish certain tasks. Town Manager Patrick Banger re-evaluates the management jobs after a couple of years to see if he still needs the help. (And, yes, the answer can be no.)

Why does that matter? Well, government tends to add positions and never get rid of them because how could we ever do without full-time bodies in those slots?

It's nice to see it the other way around.
