Matthew Grunwald won the first round of "Cutthroat Kitchen: Evilicious" tournament. He's headed to the finale on May 17.

For the final challenge of the "Cutthroat Kitchen: Evilicious" tournament first round, which aired Sunday, April 19, on Food Network, a Scottsdale chef had to make a pound cake using tools and heat sources from a chemistry set, and with one hand trapped inside a boxing glove.

Chef Matthew Grunwald, who works at Elements at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa in Paradise Valley, still won. His competitor's cake, according to the judge, was overly sweet.

After spending most of his initial $25,000 on sabotaging his competitors in the first two rounds, Grunwald walked away with $4,300 and one of four spots in the finale episode, scheduled for Sunday, May 17. Competitors in the finale will start with $50,000 — double the usual purse.

Alton Brown hosts "Cutthroat Kitchen," where contestants are faced with a series of cooking challenges. Creative means of sabotage are auctioned each episode, and the winner takes home his or her remaining purse.
