Montini: Two drowned boys, one unanswered question

Don’t expect to ever understand what happened in Avondale over the weekend because that is not possible.

Mireya Lopez, who admitted to drowning her young sons

A young mother drowns her twin 2-year-old boys and tries to drown another child (which thankfully doesn’t happen) and the first question we ask ourselves, because it’s the most logical, is, “Why?”

Is there an answer that in any way would satisfy us?

No.

There is no logic here. There's only horror. Only sorrow.

According to police, Mireya Lopez, 22, told investigators she drowned her two boys and tried to drown another child before she was stopped by family members. The third child wasn’t hurt.

The police issued a matter-of-fact statement saying just that.

And it’s still difficult to believe.

The Avondale Police Department said:

“During the course of the police investigation, suspect Mireya Alejandra Lopez … stated to police that she intentionally drowned both of her twin boys in the bathtub. Mireya also stated to investigators that she also attempted to drown another child in the home but she was stopped by family and this child did not suffer any injuries.”

Later news reports said that the father of the twins had joint custody of the boys. He supposedly said that Lopez suffered from depression and anxiety but had never done anything violent.

Now she has, apparently.

Lopez supposedly told police that she killed the boys because "nobody loved them and nobody loved her."

She is alleged to have been under the influence of drugs when the boys were drowned and has said that she suffers from manic depression, psychosis and schizophrenia.

And we’re left looking for answers.

Somewhere down the road, after investigators and prosecutors and mental health professionals and the courts work their way through this unbelievable horror, we will get an explanation. There will be some form or judicial outcome.

But that is not the same as an answer.

As for that very first question that popped into our heads -- “Why? – there will never be an answer to that.
