Many Arizona high school football players shined in Week 1.

Here is a look at the top efforts from last weekend’s games:

No. 1 Aaron Owens, Maricopa, QB, 5-11, 160, Sr.

A week after the death of teammate Nate Ford, Owens put on a passing clinic in a 53-46 victory over Avondale Agua Fria. He completed 23 of 28 passes for 537 yards and six touchdowns with an off-the-charts 162.2 passer rating.

No. 2 Johnny Johnson Jr., Maricopa, WR, 5-9, 160, Sr.

Owens needed somebody to throw it to and found Johnson nine times for 283 yards and three TDs.

No. 3 Bryce Gilbert, Gilbert Higley, TE, 6-5, 220, Jr.

The versatile, speedy, physical receiver had eight catches for 222 yards and three TDs, including a 61-yarder, in a 37-33 victory over Laveen Cesar Chavez.

No. 4 Mata’ava Ta’ase, Mesa Mountain View, WR, 6-4, 207, Sr.

He had 15 catches for 268 yards and three TDs, including a 69-yarder, in Mountain View’s 31-24 comeback win over Mesa Dobson to help the Toros improve to 2-0. He  has 22 catches 384 yards in his first two games.

No. 5 Jacob Silver, Phoenix Brophy Prep, K, 5-8, 170, Sr.

Not lost in Brophy’s impressive 30-12 win over Carlsbad (Calif.) was Silver’s kicking. He connected on field goals of 45, 37 and 52 yards and made all three of his points after touchdowns. This is Silver’s first season kicking on Brophy’s football team. He has started out with 12 for 12 on PATs and 4 for 5 on FG tries. His only miss was from 47 yards out.

No. 6 Deyton Jackson, Peoria Liberty, WR, 6-0, 175, Sr.

In a 48-45 loss to Mesa Desert Ridge, one of the better teams in the state, Jackson had a huge game on offense and special teams. He not only caught eight passes for 116 yards and a touchdown, he returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score. He had 282 all-purpose yards.

No. 7 DeSean Goodman, Chandler Basha, RB, 5-7, 165, Jr.

Three touches, three touchdowns. That’s all it took for Goodman to account for 116 yards and 18 points in a 42-23 victory over Vail Cienega, giving Basha’s high-powered passing game needed balance. He averaged 38.7 yards a carry.

No. 8 Darion Stewart, Phoenix St. Mary’s, DE, 6-2, 200, Jr.

He had six tackles and 2 ½ sacks and a fumble recovery he returned 50 yards in the Knights’ 32-7 Division II victory over Chandler Seton Catholic. He has four sacks in St. Mary’s 2-0 start under coach Marcel Lopez, who took over the team just before first official practices.

No. 9 Freddy McCarty, Nogales, RB, 5-11, 170, Sr.

A week after rushing for 117 yards against Phoenix Shadow Mountain, McCarty turned it up a notch in a 35-7 win over  Sierra Vista Buena, rushing 20 times for 247 yards and two TDs.

No. 10 Easton Palomino, Glendale Deer Valley, QB, 6-3, 195, Sr.

In a 47-43 shootout win against Surprise Willow Canyon, Palomino was 17 of 28 for 338 yards and three TDs, including a 76-yarder to Thomas Sahotsky (seven catches, 173 yards, 2 TDs) with no interceptions. He also ran eight times for 42 yards and a score.
