Prop. 104 makes transportation more affordable

Cynthia Zwick
Less than 1 percent of us use light rail. Shouldn't education be a bigger priority?

It’s a fact that the largest household expense after housing is transportation. Public transportation takes some of the bite out of that expense.

At the same time, public transportation benefits even those who may not use it by growing our economy through job creation and by providing the means for many people to get to other jobs, including the working poor.

Many individuals using bus and light rail from working poor families often can’t afford to pay the costs to buy, operate and maintain a car. But they want to work — often working two jobs — to move themselves and their families out of poverty.

That’s the goal of the Arizona Community Action Association and Community Action Agencies: To help individuals move toward financial independence.

Public transportation is a key component of that effort. Proposition 104 increases affordable transportation choices, which increases job and other opportunities for Phoenix residents. That’s why a “yes” vote for Proposition 104 makes sense on so many levels.
