Planned Parenthood’s main work helps reduce abortions

Abortion is only a small portion of what Planned Parenthood does.

While I agree with much in Laurie Roberts’ Monday column (“Tone isn’t the only issue with Planned Parenthood video”), she seems to imply that the basic problem lies with Planned Parenthood, an organization whose vital work helps to prevent abortions.

Yes, it does provide abortions, but up to 90 percent of the services provided by Planned Parenthood are for preventive health care including birth control, cancer screenings, STD prevention and treatment, and sexual health education.

MACEACHERN: Fetal body part furor misses the issue

Partial-birth abortions — only a small percentage of all abortions — are never simple. Yes, they make us uncomfortable, but this does not change the fact that they are sometimes necessary. It is a lonely, wrenching decision that a woman must make.

Referring to such abortions as “a horror story repeated every day” only serves to further fuel the stridency of our national debate on this issue. Roberts’ tone does not help us achieve the rational compromise so sorely needed today.
