Phoenix police caught a 32-year-old employee at Mountain Sky Middle School spying on the girls' locker room, authorities said.

A staff member at the middle school, at Seventh Avenue and Greenway Parkway, alerted police after noticing that shelving in a storage closet had been rearranged to access an old laundry chute, according to a Phoenix police spokesman, Sgt. Trent Crump. The laundry chute served as a peephole into the girls' locker room, he said.

After reviewing security footage, police arrested school janitor Daniel Aitken. Cameras caught Aitken entering the storage closet on Monday multiple times and attempting to look through the chute, Crump said.

Aitken told investigators he had been spying on the locker room for about a month, according to arrest records. He was booked on Tuesday and is expected to face one count of unlawful viewing and three counts of attempted unlawful viewing.

A judge has since placed Aitken on supervised release and house arrest. He cannot go back to the school and is not allowed to have any contact with the alleged victims.

The next hearing will take place Oct. 20.
