Glendale and the Coyotes invoke the C word -- compromise. (or is it ciao?)

Arizona Coyotes and Glendale reach compromise

How refreshing to see two sides that had a lot to lose bite the bullet, hold their noses, sit down together and … compromise.

Hockey in the desert is saved once again -- for now --as the Arizona Coyotes and the city of Glendale avoid a major meltdown – another major meltdown, that is – and agree on a new temporary deal.

One that'll allow the team to stay at Gila River Arena. For now. The team scoops up revenue from parking, ticket fees and naming rights, money that originally went to the city. And it can skate away in 2017, rather than waiting until 2018.

One that'll presumably allow the city to bleed pints of red ink instead of gallons of the stuff. Instead of handing over a ridiculous $15 million a year to the Coyotes to manage the arena, the city will hand over $6.5 million.

"This revised agreement represents a positive outcome for both the city and the Coyotes," Glendale Acting City Manager Dick Bowers said. "It also allows us to move forward in a way that keeps an important economic driver in our community."

Crisis avoided. Both sides give a little. Both sides win a little. Moving forward. What a concept.

I have to wonder what would happen if our leaders in Washington could embrace it.. If they could bite the bullet, sit down together and forge a compromise on illegal immigration.

One that would deal fairly with the people who are already here.

One that would at long last secure the border.

Of course, the only reason that Glendale and the Coyotes compromised was because both sides had a lot to lose.

I don't think Republicans and Democrats see it that way.

It's a great 2016 campaign issue for Republicans who want to fire up the base. (See: Donald Trump.)

And it's a great 2016, 2020 and 2024 campaign issue for Democrats, who will easily snag larger and larger portions of the growing Latino vote the longer this issue drags us down.

So great, in fact, that after so many years I have to wonder. Does either side really want to fix illegal immigration?
