Allhands: Rebrand Arizona? Try this instead

Gov. Jan Brewer created controversy by pointing her finger at President Barack Obama after he arrived at Phoenix- Mesa Gateway Airport in 2012.

Gov. Doug Ducey is right: Arizona needs a makeover.

Senate Bill 1070 and other political antics have cost the state dearly. Outsiders think we're racist, homophobic and generally unwelcoming. Not the kind of place where a diverse band of skilled workers want to live or work.

Ducey has tasked the Arizona Commerce Authority with the rebranding effort. But even the best marketing campaign can only do so much. Because we all know the forehead-slapping headlines will appear again in January once the Legislature convenes.

No, if we really want to change how outsiders view Arizona, we've got to realize that actions speak louder than words.

We could nix the debates about chemtrails and plots by the United Nations to take over the world, for one. We could spend more time talking about ways to close the Latino achievement gap. Or get behind a statewide transportation plan. Or finally lower the sickening number of kids in foster care.

If we really want to improve Arizona's image, the answer is simple: "Don't do stupid stuff."
