Arizona Democrats join nationwide push for tolerance toward refugees
Four Arizona lawmakers, all Democrats, have signed onto a nationwide plea for tolerance toward refugee resettlement in the United States.
In an open letter to constituents, 155 state legislators from across the United States say the nation should not give into the fear stoked by the Paris attacks, while still seeking prudent ways to ensure safety. The letter applauds those governors "who have stood against the fear-mongering and proclaimed their states open and ready to welcome refugee families in need."
Gov. Doug Ducey's announced last week that he would seek a halt to any refugee resettlement in Arizona until the federal government has done a review of the screening process.
The Arizona lawmakers include House minority whip Rebecca Rios of Phoenix; Rep. Charlene Fernandez, Yuma; Sen. Andrea D'Alessandro, Green Valley; and Sen. Martin Quezada, Phoenix.
They pledge to work on legislation that would attempt to increase security in local communities while still maintaining a welcoming stance toward refugees. It does not provide any details. The letter comes from the State Innovation Exchange, which promotes progressive policies.
