Mercury update: Phoenix jumped on the Washington Mystics early Wednesday, cruising to a 73-53 victory that ensured their third consecutive winning season. … F Candice Dupree made her first eight shot attempts and finished with 18 points against the Mystics, while C Brittney Griner added 16 points as the Mercury were able to rest their starters for much of the second half. … The Mercury are 6-9 on the road this season, with five of the losses coming by double digits. … Saturday’s game will mark the 100th of Mercury coach Sandy Brondello’s career, making her the 22nd coach in WNBA history with 100 games. Her 61-38 record gives her the fourth-highest winning percentage (61.6) of any coach to reach that mark. … Brondello got her head-coaching start in San Antonio, going 14-20 with the Stars in 2010.

Stars update: This is the second game of a late-season back-to-back for San Antonio, which took on the Connecticut Sun on Friday. Prior to that game the Stars had dropped their past seven contests, taking over the worst record in the league from the Seattle Storm. … In a 60-52 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday, the Stars shot 29 percent, scoring just 17 points over the second and third quarters. … Entering Friday, second-year G/F Kayla McBride led the team with 14.1 points per game. … The home team has won each of the three previous meetings this season, the last ending with an 85-78 Mercury victory June 30 in Phoenix. …
