Allhands: Ditch the self-righteous selfie talk

Selfie-taking women from ASU drew national attention on Thursday.

Ugh. Look at those sorority girls. They're more absorbed with their cellphones and selfies than the Diamondbacks game. Why did they even bother to show up?

Admit it: If you watched the two-minute rant during the game (or afterward on social media, where it quickly went viral), you probably said something to that effect. We love to look down our noses at those people, particularly if they fit the self-centered stereotype.

That's why Alpha Chi Omega's response to the controversy is so amazing. It's a perfect reminder of why we should never judge books by their covers. And to remove the log in our own eye before we point out the speck in someone else's.

After the nationwide shaming, Fox Sports Arizona and the D-Backs offered the Arizona State University chapter free tickets to tonight's game. Those ladies could have demanded a suite or at least some free popcorn for their 5 minutes of Internet infamy.

But that's not what they did. They asked the team to donate their tickets to A New Leaf, a local domestic-violence organization, for use at a future game. They noted that October is Domestic Violence Month and urged people to support charities that provide food, shelter and other help to the battered and abused. They even provided a link to make donating easy (every penny of what's donated there will go to A New Leaf, btw).

Self-absorbed? Ha! Hardly.

Those lovely ladies responded with grace and concern for others, showing the world that cute faces in selfies can be just as beautiful from within.
