FLORENCE — Pinal County authorities say a jail inmate is hospitalized after pulling his eyeball out of its socket.

County sheriff's officials say doctors were unable to save the man's right eye.

They say 26-year-old Colin Corkhill of Scottsdale was booked into jail Wednesday on suspicion of attempted murder, theft of means of transportation, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

Corkhill was originally housed with other inmates in a cell, but detention officers saw him punch himself in the face while standing in the shower.

He was then placed in a cell by himself under a mental health watch.

On Thursday night, detention officers making routine cell checks saw blood on the window of Corkhill's cell door.

They say Corkhill had pulled his eyeball out of its socket with his fingers.
