Rockies' Trevor Story torments Diamondbacks – again

If Colorado Rockies rookie shortstop Trevor Story could play all his games in Chase Field, they’d already be reserving space for him at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Apr 30, 2016: Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story (27) slaps hands with teammates after scoring a run in the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Story continued to torment the Diamondbacks on Saturday, going 2 for 5 with three RBIs, including the game-winning, two-run triple in the top of the ninth inning off Arizona closer Brad Ziegler.

The only thing Story didn’t do in Colorado’s 5-2 victory was hit a home run. But he’s already hit plenty of those this season at Chase. His numbers in five games against the Diamondbacks are borderline ridiculous: a .347 batting average with five homers and 12 RBIs.

“I feel like you can see the ball here,” Story said. “I like playing here.”

All Story has done the first month of his major-league career is hit 10 homers and drive in 20 runs.

“The kid is getting pitched tough,” said Colorado manager Walt Weiss. “It’s not like he’s a secret anymore. He’s in a good spot in the lineup because he’s getting protection all around him but he’s been getting pitched real tough and he’s making adjustments very well.”

Story struck out against Zack Greinke in the first inning but hit an RBI double in the third to score Charlie Blackmon and give Colorado a 1-0 lead. But it was his ninth inning at-bat against the side-arming Ziegler that really impressed Weiss.

With runners on first and second and one out, he sliced a Ziegler sinker over the first-base bag and into right field to score Ben Paulsen and Blackmon.

“The kid keeps doing it,” Weiss said. “That’s a big-time hit right there. Tough at-bat against that guy, especially as a right-handed hitter. Clutch. Clutch.”

Story said his approach to Ziegler was to look for “something up because that sinker is pretty good. He’s a really tough guy to face.”

The only good news for the Diamondbacks. After Sunday’s game, Story and the Rockies don’t return to Chase Field until mid-September.
