San Diego Chargers sign Rattlers offensive lineman
Offensive lineman Michael Huey, who made All-Arena Football League in all three seasons he played for the Rattlers, signed an NFL contract with the San Diego Chargers.
Huey, 6-foot-5, 315 pounds, a key figure in the Rattlers' streak of three ArenaBowl championships from 2012-14, won't be back with the team this year unless the Chargers release him, Rattlers coach and General Manager Kevin Guy said.
"We knew about it," Guy said. "(The Chargers) gave us a heads-up last Wednesday. We knew there was a possibility when he went to the NFL Veterans' Combine (at the Cardinals' complex)."
Huey, who played collegiately at Texas, was first-team All-Arena in 2012 and last season. He made second-team All-Arena in 2013.
He did not play in the Rattlers' 60-43 season-opening win against the Spokane Shock last Saturday.
The Rattlers still are without offensive lineman Keith Williams, who is getting closer to being healthy to play, Guy said. Joe Gibbs, Sherman Carter, Brennen Carvalho and Will Simmons are combining to hold the offensive line together.
