Douglas’ squabbles reveal education is in fine shape

Has everyone been enjoying the latest episode of the Diane Douglas reality show?

You may remember the pilot episode brought us a battle between our Superintendent of Public Instruction and the governor over her attempt to fire members of the state board that disagreed with her. There have been numerous issues since then, and all seem to revolve around her authority more than about the needs of our students.

In the most recent episode, she apparently called state troopers when the president of the state School Board reportedly touched her arm at a board meeting.

I am pleased the state of education in Arizona is so secure that such things are the biggest issues the Superintendent of Public Instruction has to deal with. It would be different if our Legislature were cutting support for public education, or if thousands of teachers were fleeing our state, or if our university costs kept going up, or if our schools adjusted to budget cuts by getting rid of nurses, librarians and recess.

If any of that were true, then she should quit focusing on herself, and get back to work helping our students.
