Coal Mine Canyon

Coal Mine Canyon is a stark and colorful formation on the Navajo Reservation. Hidden away on the desert plains of northeastern Arizona, the canyon is interesting for its sandstone layers and many hoodoos that are reminiscent of Utah's Bryce Canyon. A permit from the Navajo Nation is required for hiking, camping or backpacking.

Details: Off State Route 264 about 16 miles southeast of Tuba City. navajonationparks.org/permits.htm.

B isbee Mining and Historical Museum

Bisbee is known for its mining history, arts community and stairs, but did you know it also is home to the smallest institution to participate in the Smithsonian affiliate program? The Bisbee Mining Museum and Historical Museum presents the highs and lows of the city's mining past. It tackles everything from the deportation of striking mine workers in 1917 to how copper is a vital part of our everyday life. Three-dimensional and interactive displays make it a family-friendly museum.
