Construction will start soon on the new Tempe Kimpton Hotel.

Construction on a new Kimpton boutique hotel high-rise in downtown Tempe is set to start in November.

The owners of downtown Tempe's historic Hayden House, where historic eatery Monti's La Casa Vieja

was located, have signed a 20-year operating agreement with the San Francisco-based Kimpton chain and hope to have the luxury, 16-story hotel open by late 2017.

Plans for the  development called One | Hundred | Mill

also include a 15-story, 260,000-square-foot upscale office tower and restaurant as well as retail space.

Arizona politician Carl Hayden was born in the house in 1877

It will be preserved and be part of the  $190-million office and hotel project on the southwest corner of Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway.

San Diego-based Douglas Wilson Cos. and Hensel Phelps Development LLC

partnered to pay $16.875

million for the 2.5-acre site last fall.

“Tempe is in the midst of a major growth phase right in terms of new downtown office development spurred by increases in the tech employment base, increased ASU student enrollment and campus expansion, and we’re excited to bring the city its first, modern luxury boutique hotel experience,”  Kimpton CEO Mike DeFrino said in a statement.

Plans call for the Kimpton Tempe hotel to have 237 guest rooms, 12,000 square feet of indoor meeting space and a 4,750-square-foot rooftop pool and terrace lounge.

Michael Monti's Catering sold the land and historic restaurant to the current development group. Michael's father, Leonard Monti, bought the Hayden House in 1954and opened Las Casa Vieja in 1956. The Hayden House, believed to be built in the 1870s, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Cushman & Wakefield has the leasing assignment for One | Hundred | Mill with office space being handled by Jerry Noble, Patrick Devine and Greg Mayer and the retail by Brent Mallonee and Rhonda Diaz Caldewey.
