Stanley Johnson named California's Mr. Basketball

TUCSON -- One more honor (and zero surprise) for incoming Arizona Wildcats wing Stanley Johnson: He's been named California's Mr. Basketball.

Johnson, who led Mater Dei High School to a 35-0 record and California State Open Division title, was a no-brainer for the award. He's already been a McDonald's All-American and member of Team USA in the Nike Hoop Summit since the season ended.

Johnson's mother and former coach, Karen Taylor, told Cal-Hi Sports she was proud Stanley won the California award.

"I raised Stanley and put the ball in his hand when he was three years old," Taylor told Cal-Hi Sports. "I raised him to set goals to make things like this happen. I'm proud that he listened enough. I told him, 'You just got to do a bit more and trust your teammates more,' and that's what he did."

Johnson follows none other than departing Wildcats forward Aaron Gordon in winning the award, with Gordon having been named California's Mr. Basketball in 2012 and 2013 while playing for Mitty High School in San Jose.
