A 17-year-old girl drowned while at a swim party in Phoenix Saturday night, authorities said.

Phoenix police officers and firefighters responded to a home near 43rd and Missouri avenues about 10:30 p.m. in response to a reported drowning, Phoenix Police Department spokesman Officer James Holmes said.

The girl and her 13-year-old brother were at the home with about 20 to 30 other people, Holmes said. The boy said he saw his sister in the shallow end of the pool when he got out.

He hadn't seen her for about 15 minutes when another person at the party said he felt something at the bottom of the pool, Holmes said. Partygoers pulled the teenager from the deep end of the pool and administered CPR.

Firefighters arrived and took her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead less than an hour later, Holmes said. Her brother told officials he didn't know if his sister knew how to swim.

Police have not released the girl's identity pending notification of next of kin.
