Sean Phillips, Navy MA2, surprises his family including his mom, Liz Calhoon, and wife Michelle (right) during a surprise homecoming at Bass Pro Shops in Mesa, Ariz. June 4, 2014. The seaman's family thought they won a raffle that included a shopping spree at the Mesa outdoors store and were meeting a celebrity.

The day's agenda was supposed to hold a few simple thrills for an East Valley family of country-music fans and outdoor aficionados: claim a raffle prize, indulge in a shopping spree and dine with an unknown celebrity.

But their excitement about winning a prize and chatting with a country-music star was quickly replaced by a wave of heartfelt emotions when Sean Phillips emerged from the wings of the Bass Pro Shops in Mesa, becoming the latest returning military member to surprise his family members with an unanticipated arrival.

Phillips, 30, made the trip home from the Navy on Wednesday, more than a week before his relatives expected him to return. It was his final homecoming because he has completed his military service.

"I was stunned," said his wife, Michelle Phillips. "It took me a second to register who it was."

Phillips' family was drawn to the outdoor emporium near Loop 202 and Dobson Road under the ruse that Sean's sister, Sarah Calhoon, had won a raffle at Country Thunder USA and would be meeting a celebrity at the store.

Family members gathered in a private room in the store and speculated about who the surprise celebrity would be.

Mesa Mayor Alex Finter played along with the story of the raffle and spoke to the family, congratulating Calhoon on winning the prize package.

After asking Calhoon about her favorite country celebrity, Finter called upon the special guest to join them, and Phillips entered the room, eliciting tears from many family members.

The Navy veteran was swarmed by family members who wanted to hug him and commemorate the day with photos.

Phillips, a master-at-arms second class, had served in the Navy for eight years and was based in Washington state.

The family believed Phillips would return home on Father's Day, June 15, which is his step-daughter Charlotte's birthday.

Phillips and his sister-in-law, Vanessa Dobbins, began planning the surprise several months ago and chose Bass Pro Shops because it's Michelle's favorite store.
