Riders and racers share the trails in the Man against Horse Race on Mingus Mountain.

Equestrian aficionados and running devotees will come together for a challenge in the tall pines and cooler elevations of Mingus Mountain on Oct. 4.

The 31st annual Man Against Horse race pairs an ultra run with an endurance ride on the mountainous trails of Prescott National Forest.

The event offers three loop courses: a 12-mile course of rolling terrain, and two moderately difficult climbing-elevation trails of 25 and 50 miles each.

Runners will tackle their trails concurrently with the horse-riding competitors.

This event, particularly the 25- and 50- mile courses, is for experienced runners and riders. The elevation begins at 5,000 feet, and the 50-mile course climbs to 7,600 feet. Weather conditions are unpredictable.

There will be a post-race barbecue for participants ($7 additional fee for 12-milers), and every competitor gets a T-shirt. Racers and riders who complete the 50-mile course earn a souvenir belt buckle.

Details: Rides and runs start at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. Mingus Mountain base camp, Fain Road and State Route 89A, near Prescott. $25-$95. 928-636-2028, managainsthorse.net/.
