Authorities said they apprehended a suspect in the shooting of a Navajo police officer on Saturday.

Navajo Nation spokesman Deswood Tome says Officer Joseph Gregg was shot in the face Saturday in Kaibeto and was in stable condition at a hospital in Flagstaff.

The male suspect, whose name was not released, had barricaded himself in a home with an unknown number of children, according to Deswood Tome, a tribal spokesman.

The officer, who was shot in the face with a 12-gauge shotgun after responding to a call about a domestic disturbance, had exchanged gunfire with the suspect, officials said. The suspect was also wounded, but his condition was not clear.

Kaibeto is about 150 miles north of Flagstaff.

Rick Abasta, communications director for Navajo President Ben Shelly, said that the FBI is investigating but that he was not able to disclose any further information.

"Our prayers and condolences go out to the family," Shelly said in a statement. "This incident only underscores the dangers facing our police officers on the Navajo Nation."
