The annual holiday series features 3.8 million lights across the park, strung across trees, plants and buildings, and on armatures shaped like animals, plants, insects and mythical creatures. Kids can also enjoy carousel, camel and wagon rides, "pet" stingrays and chat with Jengo the Talking Giraffe. Alcoholic beverages will be sold Friday and Saturday nights.

Through 12/30: Las Noches de las Luminarias

December in the desert doesn't feel too wintery, but this annual tradition at Desert Botanical Garden lets everyone know that the holiday season is nearing. Following the Hispanic Christmas tradition, brown bags containing lighted candles line the garden's paths, creating a peaceful and romantic glow amid the saguaros and other desert flora. Mariachi Pasión, Pick and Holler, the Sahnas Brothers and handbell ringers are among the performers you'll hear throughout the garden each night. Bars are stationed around the garden for those 21 or older. Dine at Gertrude's restaurant; a buffet and cafe also are available.

Through December: Polar Express

Take the kids to Williams, where they can board a train for a ride to the North Pole, complete with treats, Christmas carols and a reading of "The Polar Express." A visit from Santa will highlight the journey.

Through 12/27: North Pole Experience

Ride a trolley to Santa's workshop and toy factory at the North Pole Experience, adjacent to Little America Hotel in Flagstaff. The tour includes a visit to Elf University, Mrs. Claus' Bakery and Santa's mail room. The day ends with a visit with Santa for a photo. Meet American Indian artists and purchase their work at more than 100 booths. Local musicians and dancers will perform, there will be fry bread and other Native American food to try and you can watch demonstrations of traditional cooking methods.
