April restaurant openings, closings in metro Phoenix

April was a busy month for restaurants. There are at least 30 newcomers now open, including Corduroy in Phoenix, Sorso Wine Room in Scottsdale, Slickables Ice Cream Sandwich in Mesa and Jogoya Sushi Seafood Buffet in Chandler. A few spots closed, including Hooters on Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe.

Desoto Central Market

Housed in the historical C.P. Stephens DeSoto Six Motorcars building in downtown Phoenix, this food hall is home to DCM Burger Bar, Tea & Toast Co. (cafe), Yard Bird + the Larder (Southern food), Radish (salads, cold-pressed juices), Adobo Dragon (Asian-Latin) and Walrus & the Pearl (raw seafood bar). Diners eat in the communal dining room and on the dog-friendly patio. Shawn Connelly is the founder, and Stephen Jones, formerly Blue Hound Kitchen & Cocktails at Hotel Palomar, is executive chef.

Mornin' Moonshine

Mornin' Moonshine (non-alcoholic) is DJ Fernandes' cold-brew coffee, which was sold out of his two central Phoenix restaurants, Tuck Shop and Vovomeena. It is now the star of its own brick-and-mortar shop in a 50-year-old skyscraper in downtown Phoenix that is undergoing renovations. Infused coffee flavors include star-anise cardamom, orange-peel ginger, green-tea mint, vanilla-pod cacao nib and lemon jalapeño. The cafe serves espresso drinks and baked goods from local vendors.

Vegan House

Spaghetti noodles come topped with tomato sauce, vegan meat and basil at this eatery that took over the former My Mom's Thai Kitchen space on Adams Street between Central and First Avenues in downtown Phoenix. Lunch specials, served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with soup and salad, include yellow curry, vegan fish wrap and pad Thai with tofu or soy chicken. Tempura orange soy chicken, vegetable dumpling curry and pumpkin peanut curry are among the main dishes.

Coup Des Tartes

Romantic French fare returns to Phoenix with the reopening of Coup Des Tartes. Owner Ron Pacioni relocated his bistro to a 1920s bungalow on an acre lot in central Phoenix. The space has high-vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors and a patio with a fireplace. The restaurant isn't BYOB anymore, and now boasts a cocktail menu with drinks such as the Coup 75 (gin, blueberries, tarragon, lemon and sparkling wine) and Coco Chanel (chocolate martini). French onion soup, brie brulee, crispy maple leaf duck breast, loup de mer and black truffle Parmesan risotto are among the dishes on the spring menu.

Corduroy

Shared plates, salads, sandwiches, soups, desserts. There's a little bit of everything on the menu at this restaurant that opened in the spot previously occupied by Schlotzsky's Deli. Among the many offerings are barbecue pork empanadas, white wine mussels, chicken katsu, Boursin cheese macaroni, chicken piri piri, duck bacon cheeseburger, smoky chopped Caesar salad and crab cake rolls. Corduroy serves food until midnight Tuesdays through Sundays (closed Mondays), with happy hour from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. to midnight.

Songbird Coffee & Tea House

This cafe reopened less than two blocks away from its original Roosevelt Row storefront. Now housed inside a historic home near Third and McKinley streets, Songbird's menu includes pour-over coffee, espresso, chocolate cream spritzers and loose-leaf teas.

George's Kitchen

Mediterranean flavors dominate the menu, with gyro pizzas, chicken pita sandwiches, tiropita (feta in phyllo dough), Greek salads and seafood platters. The locally owned restaurant is on 16th Street, north of Bethany Home Road in Phoenix. Happy hour is from 3 to 6 p.m. weekdays, featuring $5.50 appetizers, $2.50 beer and $3.50 wine. Beer and wine are available for takeout.

Kaleidoscope Juice

This cold-pressed juice shop opened inside the Cartel Coffee Lab space in downtown Phoenix. Along with a variety of drinks, Kaleidoscope serves healthful foods such as quinoa and kale salads, soba noodles, forbidden rice bowls, hemp protein bars and raw superfood truffles. There are three more stores in Scottsdale.

Los Diablos Bar and Bistro

The bar is now open at this hangout near Indian School Road and 10th Place in central Phoenix. The kitchen is scheduled to open in the coming weeks to serve lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. Matt Harty owns the Phoenix Los Diablos as well as Diablos Bar and Tapas in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Pho 602 Restaurant

Pork spring rolls, fried spring rolls, fried chicken wings with fish sauce, seafood pho, six-spice fried chicken with rice, grilled pork patties with vermicelli noodle and milk teas grace the menu at this Vietnamese restaurant near Bethany Home Road and 35th Avenue in Phoenix.

Toby Keith's I Love This Bar and Grill

Northeast Phoenix residents have a new spot to line dance and drink from mason jars now that Toby Keith's I Love This Bar and Grill is open on High Street. The venue — part restaurant, part music — features the brand's signature guitar-shaped bar and daisy-duke-wearing Whiskey Girls. The menu includes wings, burgers, smoked brisket and chicken fried chicken. Live music is scheduled most Thursdays through Saturdays. A full calendar is available online.

Firehouse Subs

This firefighter-themed sandwich shop has hot sandwiches such as the Hook and Ladder with smoked turkey breast and Monterey Jack cheese; and Firehouse meatball, corned-beef brisket and roast beef. Cold sandwiches include chicken salad and tuna.

Tokyo Joe's

This fast-causal eatery leans toward healthful foods such as edamame, build-your-own sushi, rice bowls, ramen and a tea bar. The new location, at Town & Country in Phoenix, is the third in the Valley. The others are in Mesa and Chandler. The Colorado-based company plans to open more than 20 additional branches in Arizona over the next five years.

Wingstop

This national franchise has more than a dozen sauce flavors, including original hot, lemon pepper, garlic Parmesan, hickory smoked barbecue and Cajun. The menu features chicken strips, fries, potato salad and veggie sticks. Operated by franchisee Charles Loflin, who owns dozens of locations throughout Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

Sorso Wine Room

This wine bar at Scottsdale Quarter encourages you to sorso (it means sip in Italian). Choose from 32 wines, and pair your selection with small plates such as charcuterie, bruschetta, mixed olives, burrata salad and pastries. Wine is dispensed using a Wine Emotion dispenser, a machine that pours at precise temperatures.

Sweet Basil Market Cafe

Sweet Basil opened a 42-seat cafe inside its kitchenware store and cooking school at Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard in Scottsdale. It is open Mondays through Saturdays for lunch, serving desserts until 4 p.m. Salads come with bread sticks and herbed or goat cheese butter. Combinations include cranberry pecan chicken; spinach and wild mushroom with quinoa; and chicken with smoked bacon and black beans. Sandwiches, such as the Ultimate BLT, come with coleslaw, Southwest quinoa salad or grape tomato salad. The cafe uses breads from Jon Anthony's Italian Bread Company and desserts from Aunt Abby's Confections.

Hogs & Hops BBQ

Restaurateur Joey Maggiore closed Notorious Burgers in the Shops at Gainey Ranch, and reopened the space as a barbecue-and-brew joint. While burgers are still on the menu, the focus has shifted to pulled pork sandwiches, brisket, smoked chicken platters and ribs.

BRKFST

Located in the former American Junkie spot in downtown Scottsdale, BRKFST is open as a breakfast and lunch restaurant from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and as a nightclub from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Eggs Benedict, Korean chicken and waffles, huevos rancheros, Hawaiian pizza and burgers are among the menu offerings. Daily happy hour is from 4 to 7 p.m.

Freshbox

Build your own wrap or bowl with a base of leafy greens or grains, and then dress it up with such additions as roasted sweet potatoes, golden beets, charred broccoli, mung bean sprouts, currants and housemade kimchi. This is the second location of the healthful restaurant, founded by German Vasquez Jr. He started the Yogurtology frozen yogurt stores in Scottsdale in 2008. It now operates as a national franchise company based in Tampa, Fla.

Fired Pie

Now open inside the Palm Court at Scottsdale Fashion Square, this is the 10th branch of the locally owned build-your-own-pizza chain. Diners make pizzas and salads by choosing sauces and cheeses such as mozzarella, Gorgonzola and fontina, then adding toppings such as steak, roasted chicken, artichokes, mushrooms, kalamata olives and jalapeños. Pizzas bake in three minutes.

Slickables Ice Cream Sandwich

Mix and match from a roster of cookies and ice cream to create your own ice cream sandwich at this locally owned dessert shop, now open in downtown Mesa. Cookie options include double chocolate chip, peanut butter, red velvet and white chocolate macadamia nut. Ice cream flavors include strawberry, mint chip, salted caramel, butter pecan and rocky road.

Max's Mukhaase

You'll find goat stew, fufu, peanut butter soup, fried yams, Ghana-style meat pies and spicy fried fish at this African restaurant near Alma School and Guadalupe roads in Mesa. Max's Mukhaase offers dine-in and catering.

Noodles & Company

Open at Tempe Marketplace, this Colorado-based concepts offers a mix of Asian, Mediterranean and American noodles and pastas, such as pad Thai, spaghetti with meatballs and buttered noodles. Like other fast-casual chains, Noodles lets diners customize dishes. Don't want mushrooms in the Pesto Cavatappi? Get fungi-free pasta, or double the steak portions in the stroganoff. Salads, soups and noodle-free protein bowls are also on the menu. A second Valley branch is expected to open in the coming months in the Deer Valley area.

D.P. Dough

Those near Arizona State University's Tempe campus can now get a hot calzone delivered from D.P. Dough, opened near University Drive and Rural Road. Calzones come stuffed with barbecue chicken, steak and peppers, ham and pineapple, spinach and mozzarella, and a host of other ingredients. The shop offers a different $5 calzone of the day, and delivers until 3 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 4 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. This is the first branch in Arizona.

Nush

Persian cuisine combines with European influences at this eatery near College Avenue and Sixth Street in downtown Tempe. Starters include ground beef and potato cutlets, and yogurt mint dip with naan bread. Look for main dishes like the skewer platter, chicken and vegetable wrap, and spinach and sausage linguine. Nush sells craft beers from such breweries as Sleepy Dog, Huss, SanTan, Deschutes and Papago.

Fractured Prune Doughnuts

This new doughnut shop in downtown Tempe has a takeout window and is open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Fried-to-order doughnuts are dipped in your choice of 19 glazes and 14 toppings. Cookies and cream (vanilla glaze and cookie-crumb topping), Carnival (honey glaze with rainbow sprinkles) and strawberry shortcake (berry glaze with graham crackers and powdered sugar) are among the specialty combinations. This brand opened in 1976 in Ocean Park, Md., and is named after athlete Prunella Shriek, nicknamed Fractured Prunella.

Jogoya Sushi Seafood Buffet

The Ivy

For lunch, this Mediterranean lounge in the former Chao space on Dobson and Germann roads serves pita sandwich plates and salads. At dinner, look for roasted Chilean sea bass, lamb chops, flank steak and pesto chicken penne. Christodoulos Komitis, who also owns Cyprus Grill, is part of the ownership team.

Betillos Mexican Food

Breakfast burritos, machaca and egg plates, flautas, carnitas burritors, carne asada tacos and chorizo tortas are just a few of the offerings from this new restaurant near Chandler Boulevard and Kyrene Road in Chandler. Menudo is available on weekends.
