That moment when you're out hiking and come across a bear pawprint ... Amy Novotny of Gilbert has quite a story. She writes: "A few of us were doing a 40-mile trail run on Saturday, July 30. At about mile 24, we were running on U-Bar Trail on the Mogollon Rim just north of Dane Springs when we came across the bear. At first glance, our front runner thought it was a javelina, but then she realized her mistake and shouted 'Bear! Go back! Go back!'" The bear ran away, and later the group came across these tracks along Fred Haught Trail just north of Washington Park. "I put my foot and size-8 shoe next to the bear track when I took the photo to give perspective on the size of the track," Novotny explains. See more photos at instagram.com/anovotn.

You've got to be quick to capture a hummingbird with your camera. These little birds can fly forward, backward, even upside-down. In a dive, their wings will beat up to 200 times per second. John Ryan of Scottsdale grabbed his camera in a flash when he spotted this one perched nearby. See more of his photos at johnryanphotos.com.

The hike to Reavis Falls in the Superstition Wilderness is not for the faint of heart, but the reward at the end is a magnificent waterfall. John Longo of Scottsdale captured its beauty on a day when it was "gushing after a winter storm." See more of his photos at instagram.com/john9l.

See them? That was the burning question on the minds of Dan Alpert of Flagstaff and friend as they drove around the Mormon Lake/Lake Mary area outside Flagstaff, searching for antelope. Alpert says: "I spotted some little figures reflecting a bit of the setting sunlight but from that distance it wasn't possible to tell if they were just bushes or what. So we parked and busted out the zoom lenses and confirmed they were pronghorns." See more of his photos at instagram.com/danieljames.photography.

First, he looked left. Then he looked right. Finally, Michelle Peters caught this male cardinal staring straight at her. "I was able to snap that moment with my camera and fortunately it was the only photo with the perfect symmetry of him looking at me, in that beloved 'Angry Bird' fashion!" she says. She captured the moment near Prescott, where she lives. See more of her photos at instagram.com/arizona_bird_lover.

"We kept asking ourselves, 'Are we still in Arizona?'" Iris Torres of Eloy says about her foggy hike on the Siphon Draw Trail in the Superstition Mountains. "It truly was otherworldly with all the fog and rain. ... These rocks caught my attention because of their simplicity and how the fog wrapped around them," she says. A waterfall in the desert? It's no mirage, thanks to an El Niño-spawned storm that soaked Arizona with rain and snow. James Stamsek of Mesa says he was out all day taking photos and found these falls in the Superstition Mountains along the Bush Highway not far from the Salt River tubing dropoff. See more of his photos at jamesstamsek.com.

Carla Brooks of Maricopa was hoping to photograph a snow-draped Grand Canyon. To her delight, she and her boyfriend had this fog-shrouded view instead. "I've never seen such depth in the clouds, and it looked like the mountains were floating! At times, as the clouds rolled through, it looked like a beautiful lake," she explains. "I felt very fortunate to have turned around and walked back to the lookout point. Had it not been for patience, I would have missed the view of a lifetime today!"
