Stormy Daniels

The overwhelming evidence of Donald Trump’s dalliance with the porn star Stormy Daniels (lead “actress” in “Good Will Humping”) apparently does not bother the evangelical Christians who support the president.

The fact that the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s attorney funneled $130,000 to Daniels (real name: Stephanie Clifford) to keep the affair out of the news in the final days of the presidential campaign doesn’t bother them.

The fact that Daniels gave a lengthy interview about the affair to InTouch magazine, years before the nondisclosure agreement, in which she described the affair in all its creepy details, doesn’t bother them.

Trump gets a 'mulligan' on tryst

The fact that all this happened when Trump was newly married to now-first lady Melania Trump, who had recently given birth to their son, doesn’t bother them.

In an interview with Politico, Tony Perkins, president of the evangelical organization Family Research Council, which had widely and continuously denounced President Bill Clinton for his dalliance with Monica Lewinsky, said that Trump deserves a mulligan.

“We kind of gave him — ‘All right, you get a mulligan. You get a do-over here,’ ” Perkins told in interview for Politico's Off Message podcast.

I’m sure I don’t have to spell it out for you. But, just in case, the word you’re looking for is: H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-S-Y.

How does first lady feel about 'do-over'?

Just about as un-Christian as one could get.

Given the fact that the Trumps didn’t publicly mention or appear to celebrate their 13th anniversary earlier this week, and that Melania has canceled her plans to travel with Trump to Switzerland, I’m not sure the first lady has given the president a “do-over.”

As for Trump supporters and their hypocrisy, The New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow tweeted this simple, straightforward summation:

Amen to that.
