A man was shot by Mesa police officers on March 10, 2018 after a foot chase through an apartment building near Pioneer Park.

Corrections & Clarifications: An earlier version of the story misstated the man's condition.

A man was shot by Mesa police early Saturday after a foot chase through an apartment complex near Pioneer Park, officials said.

Officers attempted to stop a driver for an expired registration near Main Street and Williams about 2:15 a.m. Saturday, according to Detective Steve Berry, department spokesman. The driver, who Berry described as a younger man, didn't stop, he added.

A police helicopter followed the vehicle to an apartment complex near Second Street and Lesueur Drive, less than two miles away, Berry said.

The man jumped out of the car and ran through the complex as officers chased him, Berry said. He pulled out at a weapon and fired multiple shots at the officers, Berry said.

Officers fired back, striking the man at least once, Berry said. The man, whose name was not released, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
