The Shop Beer Co. celebrates its grand opening on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Heads up Tempe: You're getting a new(ish) brewery.

The owners of the former Cartel Brewery, which closed on Aug. 21, will open their new beer spot on Saturday, Aug. 27. It's called The Shop Beer Co. and is taking over a 10,000-square-foot space at First Street and Hardy Drive.

The brewery will have all of Cartel's signature beers, including the Desert Pale Ale, Coffee Brown and Amber Rye. For the opening, two new beers will be introduced: Sunset Day Dream IPA and The Nines Red Ale.

David Arnce, a former partner with Cartel Coffee, launched the beer operation in 2012 as an offshoot of Cartel Coffee Lab on University Drive and Ash Avenue in Tempe.  The brewery was attached to the coffee shop, and soon outgrew the space.

"The question was, if we would continue to pursue it, we were going to have to move," Arnce said. "The Cartel space is dialed in for coffee, and we wanted something dialed into beer, so we re-branded with this new location."

The new space, previously owned by a construction company, was acquired in July 2015. The Beer Shop set aside 1,000 square feet for the taproom, 2,000 square feet for the patio and the rest for beer production. Arnce said they are able to produce 20 times what they did at Cartel Brewery.

The Shop Beer Co. will offer 32-oz. cans to go in the taproom.

Four rotating taps will be dedicated to guest beers from Arizona breweries, and 32-oz. cans of beer will be available to go in the taproom. While the space can't accommodate a kitchen, there is designated food truck parking for regular vendors during lunch and dinner.

"The goal of the place was to make something we wanted, where I would want to go and spend an afternoon," Arnce said.

As for the name, The Shop Beer Co.?

"It was born out of an internal nickname we had for our craftsman friends coming by to make stuff and help us, and were always headed to the shop one way or another," Arnce said. "It kind of named itself."

The staff will offer beer tours all day for the grand opening, and will eventually set a schedule for tours. A small stage on the patio will allow for concerts.

Details: Saturday, Aug. 27. Doors open at 10 a.m. The Shop Beer Co., 922 W. First St., Tempe. Regular hours: 11 a.m.-midnight daily. 480-747-7316, theshop.beer.
