Phoenix police said they were investigating after a billboard that had featured a Donald Trump campaign sign was defaced. The sign was covered up by midmorning Oct. 3, 2016.

A Donald Trump campaign billboard near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport apparently was defaced with Nazi swastikas overnight.

The billboard, which featured Trump's slogan "Make America Great Again," had 10 swastikas spray-painted below the slogan Monday morning.

By midmorning Monday, the billboard, located just east of the Interstate 10 and Interstate 17 junction, had been painted over completely black.

Phoenix police are investigating the incident, officials said.

The vandalism incident comes as Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, is set to return to Arizona for his sixth campaign visit. He will host a rally 2 p.m. Tuesday in Prescott Valley.

Neither Trump's campaign nor the billboard company  responded to The Republic's request for comment.
