A driver accused of striking and killing a man who was changing a tire on the side of Interstate 17 had his initial court appearance Wednesday.

Bond for 61-year-old Ronald Hull  was set at $150,000.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say Hull was booked into jail on suspicion of one count of manslaughter, three counts of aggravated assault and three counts of endangerment.

Hull did not yet have a lawyer.

Authorities say Hull was the driver of a pickup that hit 24-year-old Steven Variale and two other people early Tuesday. Variale later died from his injuries.

DPS officials say a preliminary breath alcohol test showed Hull had a blood-alcohol level of 0.118 percent. That’s well above Arizona’s legal limit of 0.08 percent for drivers.
