Mesa officers shot and wounded a man who was threatening them with a large stick Wednesday afternoon after they responded to a domestic disturbance, police said.

The shooting occurred near 82nd Street and University Drive just before 1 p.m.

Officers were called to a home in response to a disturbance involving a man and woman, police said.

A man threatened the responding officers with the stick, police said.

Officers initially attempted to fire bean bags at the man but were unable to fire from a proper angle, police said. He was shot and wounded, and then taken to a local hospital. His injuries initially were not considered life-threatening, police said.

The man, who was not identified, was not legally allowed on the property, police said. The department had responded to previous domestic-violence calls there, police added.

Three officers confronted the man outside of the house while he was working on a car to present him an order of protection document that would prevent him from being near his wife and the property, police said.

Police question two people in connection with an officer-involved shooting in Mesa on June 21, 2017.

The man then left the house and knocked on doors at a few neighbors' homes before returning to the backyard of the property, police said. Officers returned to the property, and the man pulled out a large stick and wielded it at the officers, police said.

No officers were hurt in the shooting, according to a Mesa Police Department tweet.

An investigation was under way.

Neighbor Michelle Aguilar said of the man shot, "We never had a problem at all. We used to take his son to Golfland."
