Montini: Trump's border wall, like China's 'Great Wall,' will fail

President Donald Trump reviews border wall prototypes, Tuesday, March 13, 2018, in San Diego.

President Donald Trump visited on the U.S-Mexico border in California Monday in order to check out the prototypes for a structure that, if he's lucky, will eventually become a tourist attraction.

Because it certainly won't keep us any safer.

Did you ever notice that the photographs of the border wall prototypes are almost all taken from above?

As with drones.

That curious view from above

That is a device I'd guess the more sophisticated smugglers of drugs etc. have the finances to purchase. And have already done so.

And that, of course, isn't the only way to breach a wall, particularly one that will be hampered by problems of natural terrain, property rights and more.

Then again, Trump's dream isn't really to build national security.

His dream is to build a national monument -- to himself.

That is what a multi-billion dollar white elephant along the border would be. Imagine the good such a colossal sum of money could do.

One possible benefit to a wall

Trump often points to China's Great Wall as an example of physical barrier success.

If only that were true.

The Great Wall of China was built and rebuilt and rebuilt over a couple of thousand years, costing hundreds of thousands of lives and who knows how much fortune.

And it never actually stopped China's invaders.

However, Trump might hope that his wall, like China's, will someday become a rousing success on another level:

Tourist attraction.
