Arizona Cardinals running back Kerwynn Williams runs during the first half of an NFL football game against the Indianapolis Colts, Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, in Indianapolis.

Kerwynn Williams remains atop the Cardinals running back depth chart, but Chris Johnson is likely to carry the ball more against the Cowboys Monday night than any other back.

Against the Colts last Sunday, Johnson gained 44 yards on 11 attempts, a 4-yard average, while everyone else collectively averaged 2.6-yards a carry. Johnson had a 21-yard run negated by a holding penalty. He also had the Cardinals’ longest run, 11 yards.

That doesn’t mean, however, that Johnson is going to become a workhorse and get 20 or so carries a game.

“Since he’s been within this system with us, he hasn’t gotten 25 to 30 carries a game,” quarterback Carson Palmer said. “Even when he was starting, three years ago, he would still get spelled here and there by David (Johnson) and Andre (Ellington).

“There’s probably not going to be many games this year where he just gets fed the ball 30 times a game. It could happen. There’s no doubt. He could deal with it, and it’d be great for him, but it’s just not the way it’s been broken out and worked out so far.”

Ellington played more snaps against the Colts than any other Cardinals back but had just two carries and three receptions.
