Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer (3) leaves the field injured during the first half of an NFL football game against Los Angeles Rams at Twickenham Stadium in London, Sunday Oct. 22, 2017.

The Cardinals placed quarterback Carson Palmer on injured reserve on Thursday, damaging hopes he could return this season and raising the question if he’ll play for the team again.

Palmer must miss eight weeks, meaning the earliest he could return is for the final two games of the season. He is under contract for 2018, but there is no guarantee Palmer will return. After last season, he took a month to decide to return in 2017.

Palmer underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair a broken bone in his left arm sustained last Sunday in London against the Rams. After the game, coach Bruce Arians said Palmer would miss about eight weeks, but a day later said Palmer was hopeful he could return in four to six weeks.

At that time, Arians said the Cardinals would “definitely” save one of two injured-to-return spots for Palmer.

If that is so, running back T.J. Logan’s season is over. Logan suffered a dislocated wrist in camp, and the team had hoped to bring him back this year.

The team plans to bring back running back David Johnson at some point. He is on injured reserve with a dislocated wrist. The first game in which he is eligible to return is Nov. 9 against the Seahawks, but Johnson isn’t expected back until later in the month, at the earliest.
