A plane passes an air-traffic control tower as it departs Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Monday in Phoenix, Ariz. on June 5, 2017.

Travelers flying into or out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport may have to deal with some delays early in 2018.

The airport will be closing its north runway for repairs between Jan. 8 and Feb. 21, according to airport officials.

"This is a follow-up to a series of construction and maintenance projects completed in the fall of 2016," said Krishna Patel, spokeswoman for the Phoenix Aviation Department.

"Some of the concrete that was installed is showing signs of flaking. While there is no safety issue, the affected concrete needs to be removed and replaced," she said.

Sky Harbor inspects the runway at least three times a day to take care of any observed flaking, according to Patel.

Those departing out of the airport could experience delays of up to 30 minutes during the runways repairs, the airport said in a press release Thursday.

Sky Harbor officials noted that all air traffic will be moved to the two runways on the south side of the airport.

Sky Harbor noted that because of the closed runway, air traffic will be much heavier to the south. People who live directly east or west of the open runways could notice more traffic overhead than usual for the majority of January and February.
