Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona to reopen Wednesday

The mountains above Slide Rock State Park in Oak Creek Canyon are majectic over the Arizona landmark.

Just in time for prime leaf-peeping season, Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona will open for recreation starting Wednesday. Camping, hiking and other activities have been prohibited since the Slide Fire in June.

Each fall, visitors flock to the canyon to see the blazing red oaks and maples. The most popular destination is the West Fork of Oak Creek.

The 3-mile (one-way) trail is easy to follow and generally flat, making it fun for hikers of nearly any age or fitness level. But don't expect solitude — this is one of the busiest trails in the state. There's grand scenery, towering cliffs, Old West history and the burble of the creek as you hike.

The trailhead starts in the Call of the Canyon day-use area, 10.3 miles north of Sedona on State Route 89A. The small parking area opens at 8 a.m. and fills early. The fee is $10 per vehicle. There are picnic tables and restrooms but no drinking water.

Coconino National Forest, the Sedona Fire District and other agencies have determined that the risks posed by flash flooding are sufficiently reduced to allow hiking and other activities in the canyon. However, falling trees and rocks are still potential hazards. Visitors should be aware of weather conditions and use caution.

"Returning visitors will likely be relieved to see that their favorite spots aren't completely blackened and desolate, but it's important to remember that these areas aren't completely risk-free," said Nicole Branton, Red Rock District ranger. "We've mitigated many of the imminent hazards caused by the fire, but the canyon is no longer in the condition it was before."

The A.B. Young Trail will remain closed, as will a section of land between Slide Rock State Park and the Halfway Picnic Area. Cave Springs Campground is closed for the season.
